Get your dunce hats out, Fittit, it's time for your weekly Stupid Questions Thread.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered before, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first.

Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search fittit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Lastly, it may be a good idea to sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well. Click here to sort by new in this thread only.

So, what's rattling around in your brain this week, Fittit?

As per this thread, the community has asked that we keep jokes, trolling, and memes outside of the Moronic Monday thread. Please use the downvote / report button when necessary.

    How important are body measurements?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:40 PM PST

I've been working out 4 days a week for 3 weeks so far and my body measurements haven't changed. I feel I'm making progress but wouldn't I see a change in my body measurements? I've been measuring my bust, waist and hips and they've stayed the same. I measure once a week

Advice before a workplace physical assessment

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:07 PM PST

This may be a bit of a long-winded post, so I'll try include a tl;dr at the end!

I am looking for some solid advice in preparation for a workplace physical assessment due to take place early next year (Late Jan-Mid Feb). There are fluctuations on what is a "pass" based on BMI (I'm currently 30+, however likely to be <29 by then, so I will use that standard here).

I need to make an 11:15 2.4km (1.5mi) run or 10:15 for a "golden pass", a vertical jump of 48cm (19in)+, 34+ (34, even in Imperial) press-ups (technique has been assessed and I am in the realm of ~22 consistently at this stage), and finally a combined grip strength of 120KG+ (265lb+).

My press-ups are progressing very well, I am already passing the vertical jump height, and my combined grip strength is sitting around 110KG/242lb.

Now the run time is, of course, where it gets interesting...my current PB on that is 13:29 for the distance more than two minutes short of where I need to be.

My internal battle is very much one of "do I focus on cardio, and lose weight at the risk of losing muscle, or do I up my cardio and "maintain" strength training". I have had numerous trainers advise me that I will be running about 2 seconds faster "per mile per pound". Sorry for switching between units, but "2 seconds per mile per pound" for a 1.5mi track, allegedly works out to 3 seconds saved per pound lost.

My current weight is around 106kg/233lb, with an "optimal" weight range of 66-83kg (145-183lb). Now, being someone of Polynesian descent, I have a slightly larger frame than the average chap as well as slightly above average bone density, however that most certainly does not account for the entirety of my weight. I have set 90kg as a realistic "end-goal" for myself at the stage, re-evaluating when I get there. (I should add that my starting weight a while back was 130KG+, so I'm already more than 24KG down overall). I am not expecting to reach 90kg by late Jan/Early Feb, however I would like to think I would be around the 95 mark - a humble 11KG. That amounts to 24 Pounds of weight loss - or 72 seconds, if the above formula is correct.

Now this seems wildly incorrect to me. Almost a "too good to be true" scenario - and even if it is an accurate statement, is the reduced weight worth the potential losses to muscle mass? I refuse to believe that at my current fitness level I would be running this distance a full minute and 12 seconds faster, dropping to what would be a "slightly overweight" weight.

What are people's experiences with improved run time with weight loss? At this stage I will be running 5 times per week - two lots of interval training, two leisurely jogs for endurance, and one timed run of 2.4km. My interval training days start with a basic strength routine, possibly in a vein attempt to maintain muscle mass so I don't lose progress on the other aspects of the assessment.

My diet is very much in check - I have dropped from 130KG down to where I am now, however I only picked up regular exercise around the 113KG mark, and I only picked up regular cardio around July this year (so I can't look back on myself 24KG ago to self-compare).

Too much exercise? Not enough strength training? Is the weight loss really that effective?

tl;dr I've got a lot of weight to lose, I need to improve my running time - should I focus on cardio and weight loss at the expense of muscle mass, or will my run speed improve as I 1) lose weight and 2) improve cardio through exercise anyway.

Any advice, comments, criticisms, or questions are very welcome, and sorry for the janky order of my writing!

    Cheers

    Right arm dominance - help?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 04:23 AM PST

Growing up I used to do a manually intense job over weekends and summers, and as a result lots of heavy carries has resulted in my right arm and shoulder being noticeably more powerful than my left. Aesthetically there's no real difference but my weak link left is screwing with my bench progression (no gym for now - dumbbell bench in my basement). Any suggestions how to equalize? All sensible ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Extreme anger from working out?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:45 AM PST

Im having such terrible anger i dont really work out a lot as of recently but i was taking small amounts of protein supplement along with working out and i gained some muscle, i already am pretty fit and somewhat muscular and that made me more muscular. Sorry if im not typing right because its really late here. I stopped taking the protein shit a while ago and just recently went back into working out a lil bit here and there but its making my anger so fucking terrible im going into terrible rage over small shit and i almost fought some stranger. I cant even sleep right now because im angry for no reason and want to fight. I want to work out because it gets my blood pumping and makes me feel energetic but i dont want to be perpetually hostile to everyone. I kind of lashed out at my dad and i feel bad. I know im done with the protein shit forsure because i dont really need it and i build muscle ridiculously fast either way but i want to just normally work out. My workouts consist of punching a bag, doing pullups on an " i " shaped beam in my basement and doing situps sometimes, i also walk around sometimes to the gas station etc. my diet is pretty good.

    Bench dips palm pain

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 12:39 AM PST

I recently started doing bench dips and the nerves on my right hand hurt. I pretty sure I'm doing them correctly, the pain is caused by the pressure on my palm. What should I do to avoid that?

I'm 16 and somehow instantly gain around 7kg in 2 month, is this normal?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:16 AM PST

I regularly check my weight every month and for a year it has been consistent around 65-68. I forgot last month check and now it showed 75kg.

I excercise and workout almost every day, My body didn't change much and I only gain 2cm in height (175-177). I'm also Asian and my friends with the same body type never went above 65 afaik.

so is this normal or should I be worry?

Also side question. How do I get rid of these belly fats, my body's pretty fit around chest and arm, but somehow my belly and sidebelly have this gross amount of fat that's noticeable when in curl?

    Thanks in advance
