    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:04 AM PST

Welcome to the /r/Fitness Daily Simple Questions Thread - Our daily thread to ask about all things fitness. Post your questions here related to your diet and nutrition or your training routine and exercises. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer.

As always, be sure to read the wiki first. Like, all of it.

Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search fittit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to search are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

Be aware that the more relevant information you add, the more relevant the answers you receive will be. And if you are posting about your routine, please make sure you follow the guidelines.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk or chit-chat. Also, the community decided long ago that we keep jokes, trolling, and memes outside of the Daily Q&A threads. Please use the downvote / report button when necessary.)

Why are food calories not based on the weight of the food?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:18 AM PST

For example, if i weight 70kg and hold a 200g of chips while standing on a weighing machine, I should weight 70.2kg.

If I eat it, it should be the same.

If I replace it with celery, it should be the same.

Why is this not the case? Understand that certain foods take longer/ quicker to digest, and there is differences in calorie composition of proteins/fats/carbs, but at the very instance of eating (ignoring calories burned), the maths should stack up?

    When to stop limiting calories?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:36 AM PST

I'm planning a fairly chunky bike round round a Scottish island next year and so have been preparing for it now. The first thing I started to do was to lose my excess weight. My goal was to lose 6kg, which I did my through limiting calories during the week. I've lost about 4kg so far, so I'm well on the way.

However I've also started increasing my fitness regime, which as well as doing long rides includes strength work on my legs and back. This makes things a bit more complicated because obviously my body needs calorific input to recover and build muscle.

I'm worried that if I limit calories too much I'll hinder my muscle growth, but equally I still have fat I want to get rid of. So how do I decide when to stop limiting my calories and start trying to build up again?

What are some good upper oblique exercises?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:30 AM PST

I know that the obliques is a single muscle on each side of the abs but like abs different exercises have more of an emphasis on different parts of the muscle. I've gained some definition on my obliques but the top of my obliques are lacking and it makes the top of my abs look really square and blocky (you can see the edge of the top of my abs if that makes sense).

What a some good exercises to target upper obliques?
