38 year old bodybuilder recovery from torn quad. This is my story.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 05:49 PM PDT

This is me in 2018 3 months before I tore my quad. https://imgur.com/a/QU3zWZi This is how I am dealing with my injury.

I have been a bodybuilder since I was in my 20's and at 36 I had just competed and got 3rd place in an open heavyweight NPC competition. 3 months later, I had an accident and tore my quad off the bone. I destroyed other ligaments and had a hamstring harvest and several anchors to repair my knee. I usually walk around at 260+ and competed last at 221. I have had 4 dislocations in that knee, so my legs have always been a weak point for me. In the offseason I train using bodybuilding and strongman exercises to put on mass and gain strength. I was able to reach a goal of a 700 lb deadlift at 303 lbs in my last offseason and took 7.5 months to lose 82 lbs to compete at 221. After my accident, I was devastated. My girlfriend moved in and had to help me just to go to the bathroom, appointments, get dressed, shower etc. I ended up proposing to her on crutches btw. Now that we are dealing with Covid-19, I have built my own gym at home and am using lower weight and a lot of reps to rebuild what I lost. I am friends with my surgeon and he said in so many words that I am able to start serious training if I gradually increase resistance. Right now I am still eating like I am at the start of a comp diet so that I don't go overboard on calories, I am using supplements to get my nutrition as perfect as I can and staying hydrated. I am doing 30 minutes of cardio in the morning to help my breathing and endurance. I work 8-12 hours and come home to another clean meal. After letting it digest, I hit the weights on the same regimen I was using before. After weights, I do tire flipping and then directly following that, I walk 2 miles with a 75 lb vest. Research shows that using a weighted vest increases ATP turnover, VO2 max and bone density. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16679992/) Since my knee has been repaired, I want to make it a point to build them like I have always wanted to. I also want to say thank you for all the motivation this subreddit gives me. Keep lifting and getting better.
