    Posted: 22 May 2021 02:00 AM PDT

Welcome to the /r/Fitness Daily Simple Questions Thread - Our daily thread to ask about all things fitness. Post your questions here related to your diet and nutrition or your training routine and exercises. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer.

As always, be sure to read the wiki first. Like, all of it. Rule #0 still applies in this thread.

Also, there's a handy search function to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search r/Fitness by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to check first are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

If you are posting a routine critique request, make sure you follow the guidelines for including enough detail.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk, chit-chat, jokes, memes, "Dear Diary" type comments, shitposting, or non-fitness questions. It is for fitness questions only, and only those that are serious.)

    Doctor recommended against exercise

    Posted: 21 May 2021 05:29 PM PDT

My wife recently went to the doctor for a general health check up and physical. While there, my wife inquired about getting more healthy and potentially losing weight (healthy weight already). What struck me as weird is that she told me the doctor advised against additional exercise and recommended to adjust her diet only instead.

The reasoning behind this is that additional exercise would increase appetite and the calories burned wouldn't offset the potentially increased calories taken in. A quote she said, "go for a 45 min walk, burn 100 calories. Then go home and roast vegetables with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, which would consume the 100 calories right back". She also tried to get her to come back to prescribe some diet/fat burning pills which seems weird to me.

Is this normal or recommended as a general consensus now? I was previously in the army, and exercise was drilled into me to for getting healthy (which makes sense). And it seems like common sense that good diet with the addition of moderate / plus exercise would outweigh the benefits to no exercise at all. Not to mention the obvious muscle building and cardio vascular benefits that come with regular exercise.

Just trying to get a general opinion because the doctors recommendation seems silly. Or I might be wrong which I'm willing to accept as well.
