    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:00 AM PST

Welcome to the /r/Fitness Daily Simple Questions Thread - Our daily thread to ask about all things fitness. Post your questions here related to your diet and nutrition or your training routine and exercises. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer.

As always, be sure to read the wiki first. Like, all of it. Rule #0 still applies in this thread.

Also, there's a handy search function to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search r/Fitness by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to check first are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

If you are posting a routine critique request, make sure you follow the guidelines for including enough detail.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk, chit-chat, jokes, memes, "Dear Diary" type comments, shitposting, or non-fitness questions. It is for fitness questions only, and only those that are serious.)

I haven’t been to a gym since high school (almost 9 years ago). Do people work out alone? Don’t you need a spotter?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:12 PM PST

Moved to a new city and know no one, want to finally join a gym (didn't in the past because of money, confidence, laziness, etc), but again I don't have anyone to go with. Do people do squats and bench and other stuff without a spotter?

Also, I haven't been to a gym in 9 years. How do I figure out how to use most of the machines? Hire a personal trainer for like 2 weeks?

    Split routine

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:23 PM PST

Hi y'all: New Years resolution is to work on my flexibility and (hopefully) get to the point where I can do a front split on the floor. For reference, I'm a pretty fit female (above 30). I'm not terrible with flexibility, but I've never been able to do the front split. I've never tried or trained consistently for it.

Can someone give me a good routine that would help with this? How long do you think it would take me be able to do a full front split? Thanks

Opinions on the best way to acchieve a desirable male body through lifting: Traditional bulking method Vs eating at maintenance.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:38 AM PST

So a bit of background about me. I am 5'10 and weigh 79kg. My lifts are: Squat (85kg) 3x5, Bench (52.5kg) 3x5, Deadlift (85kg) 3x5. When I started lifting I had pretty much 0 Muscles and im gonna guess around 20-25% body fat. I was a typical skinny fat dude.

I have been lifting 5/6 days a week with pretty much a full BB/DB/Cable setup for just over 1 month. During this time i have also been bulking and in 2 months i've put on 9kg - which ofcourse is very visable.. mostly around my guy and front.

Ideally I want to have an athletic build. So not huge or bulky like a powerlifter or body builder but still visable kind of 'Jacked' in a shirt. I'd also love to have visable abs so a low body fat % is essential as well.

Is a bulk really neccessary to achieve the kind of body that I am after? Surely not every person with an athletic/muscular build has had to bulk and then cut to acchieve that body.

MOST advice on reddit will tell you that if you are not bulking you simply will not increase in size, with the exception of newbie gains. So I suppose there may be an upper limit of potential growth that the body can reach without a surplus of calories.

For example, if you take the body of a gymnast. These guys are ripped to shreds and look phenomenal. I just cant imagine them ever going through bulking stages to get like that, but ofcourse they have most likely been training since they were very young, so they're at an advantage there.

Anyone here been able to achieve an athletic build without a bulking/cutting??

    Physique Phriday

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:00 AM PST

Welcome to the Physique Phriday thread

What's the point of having people guess your body fat? Nevermind that it's the most inaccurate method available, (read: most likely way wrong - see here) you're still just putting an arbitrary number to the body you have. Despite people's claim that they are shooting for a number, they're really shooting for look - like a six pack.

So let's stopping mucking around with trivialities and get to the heart of the matter. This thread shall serve two purposes:

    1. Physique critiques. Post some pics and ask about muscles or body parts you need to work on. Or specifically ask about a lagging body part and what exercises worked for others.
    2. An outlet for people that want to show off their efforts that would otherwise be removed due to Rule 4, and

Let's keep things civil, don't be a creep, and adhere to Rule 1. This isn't a thread to announce what you find attractive in a mate. Please use the report function for any comments that are out of line.

So phittit, what's your physique pheel like this phriday?

Best dumbbell weight for a beginner? Non-adjustable just free weight.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 01:46 AM PST

Hi all, I am looking to begin weight training and want to start with at-home exercises using dumbbells.

My question is: what weight can I begin at? I cannot afford resale prices for adjustable dumbbells like powerblocks and would prefer to start with dumbbells at a set weight.
