Beginner Fitness: Can't do any Pushups? (Try This!)

Can't do any Pushups? (Try This!)

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 10:26 AM PST

Push ups are the gold standard of body weight exercises. But we all have to start somewhere with them. Don't let zero or one push up maximums deter you from your fitness goals.

If you can't do push ups, follow this progression.

    Here's the video

    Wall Push Ups

Deep (Further Back) Wall Push Ups

Incline or Incline Negative Push Ups

    Standard Negative Push Ups

Standard Push Ups (until form failure) into Standard Negatives

Your focus here should be on form rather than numbers. Get it into your head early to not have your elbows flare, to squeeze your shoulder blades together at the bottom, and to keep a straight back throughout. No S bending or hip bucking allowed.

Three good form push ups are worth more than 10 weird wonky ones.

Do what you can until you can do more. But be patient. This can take time, but you will get there.

I can't wear skinny jeans any more

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 04:30 PM PST

A year ago, I (38M) loved my skinny jeans. I'm pretty sure I looked like some sort of chicken, but still, I loved them.

Today, I've lost about 3" from my waist (and 3/4" from my belly) through running and diet and I've finally come to the conclusion I can't wear skinny jeans any more, despite the fact that I'm skinnier. The reason? Every time I bend my legs, skinnies that fit on my waist ride up on my calves and stay there! I'm really happy about the improvements I've made to my body and my health (though there are more to be made), but I'm going to miss my skinny jeans. I guess I need to either live with this or find some sort of muscle cut jeans that work for my new body shape (any ideas here are very welcome - I'm in the UK).

ust wanted to share n NSV with everyone and ask for tips :)

    Shoulder disaster

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST

Hello everyone! I'm here to properly vent. Because what else is Reddit for? If you're having ANY problems with your shoulder, this is important for you to check out. My left shoulder has spiraled out of control.

I have been in pretty debilitating shoulder pain for over 6 years. The pain is very deep. Dull, but sharp. Stabbing, constant, chronic. I have a dysfunctional shoulder with dysfunctional scapulohumeral rhythm. My reason: I followed my passion and got stung hard for it. Being a violist is no trivial career for me or anyone.. I just.. got ran over by it and sadly did not learn about scapular mechanics, diaphragmatic breathing and so much more before it was too late.

I have trouble breathing, I can't sleep properly, and I've seen literally countless doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, Chinese medicine experts and personally working with a kinesiologist. I recently went through my 4th injection. Several diagnoses. I've traveled over 24 hours and God knows how much $$$$ to try and make sense of the pain I'm going through.

But this is the article that will wake me/ them up. For the past couple years I've been honing in on trigger points. I knew I had myofascial pain but trigger points are more serious than you think. As the article appropriately calls them MONSTERS.

They're REAL monsters and if not treated properly, you'll end up restless and crazy like me right now.

The last sentence actually calmed me down though:

"Determining the proper order to release shoulder pain trigger points is no easy task, it requires a detailed understanding of trigger point therapy and many years of practical experience. Much like a jigsaw puzzle, where the placement of each piece is determined by the shape and positions of the other pieces in the puzzle, a competent trigger point therapy protocol for shoulder pain must consider how all the pieces fit together."

I like puzzles. I want to understand the most complex puzzles in life like computers, engines, and... bodies. That. Takes. YEARS. 10,000 hours. "Practical experience"

Sigh, if you've gotten this far, I only beg you to do whatever it takes to release the trigger points before they take you over. And if you or your child plays a shoulder instrument, (violin or viola) PLEASE. PLEASE teach them to breathe properly with their instrument and keep the shoulders simply square.

We all have things we'd tell our past selves, and those are mine. I can tackle this now, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life, but I wish I didn't have to.
