Getting Burnt Out on Tracking Macros. Any Tips for Someone Looking To Step Away from Tracking?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:11 PM PST

Happy Friday everyone. As the title explains, I think I've finally hit a breaking point when it comes to tracking everything that goes in my mouth. Little bit of context here, I'm a formally overweight 33yo male that dieted down from 290lbs to 145lb over the course of the last two years. Roughly 8 months ago, at my lightest weight, I decided it was time to put together a solid weightlifting routine, and entered what many would probably consider a lean bulk. I started using the Carbon Diet Coach app from Layne Norton to track my progress, and have seen success with this method. Both in training progress, and physique overall. Everything was going great until an app update wiped my progress which was very frustrating, so I decided to jump over the the RP Diet App as the training routine I was using was from RP and figured I'd go with their nutrition protocols as well. Again I found success using the app, and I've steadily progressively overloaded all my lifts nicely. Over this period, I've gained back about 10lbs (mostly muscle) and I'm very happy with where I'm currently at, though my overall goal is probably to get to the 160-170ish range in weight before I try to just hold it there long term and continue training.

With that out of the way, this morning I woke up and went to check in my weight in RP, but it seems a recent iOS update caused a major bug that wasn't allowing me to log my data and get my new macros for the upcoming week. This kind of was a lynchpin moment for me as I at first got so frustrated and had this weird sense of all my progress being fucked up (even though that's ridiculous) and I somewhat had a come to jesus moment where I feel like I want to give up all these apps and tracking macros altogether and just focus primarily on eating intuitivly, being able to enjoy all the food my wife cooks without spending 25 minutes weighing everything on a scale, and just keep hitting the weights hard and progressing there. I said fuck it and for the first time in well over a year, I haven't tracked a single thing today. Just kinda ate what I normally eat, not weighing anything and just loading my plate with the amount of food I felt I was hungry for. So far, if I was to estimate consumption, I'm actually probably under what RP would have me at for the day. I feel fine. Energy is great. Hit legs hard today and got an awesome pump. The world didn't end because I didn't weigh out exactly 180g of egg whites for breakfast.

My question for you all is this. Am I making a mistake here? Two years of tracking consistently has I feel prepped me in terms of knowing what's in food and what the right choices and amounts are. Sure I'll probably have days here and there where I'm snackier than usual, but if there's one thing I've learned in these two years is that consistency>perfection. Has anyone else here been a strict tracker that one day decided to step away from tracking and just ate normally to satiety? If so, what sort benefits/drawbacks did you find? I'm still going to monitor weight and progress pics, and I know what needs to be done to tweak my consumption here and there when needed, so I'm not like, terrified I'm just going to balloon up. And in many ways, this is just an experiment for now to see how it goes not tracking for a week. But yeah, wanted to see if anyone else here that has been in this game much longer than me has any wisdom to share on that front.

Thanks for taking the time if you read that, and looking forward to seeing what ya'll have to say!

    Bench keeps going down??

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:07 AM PST

2.5 months ago was doing 205 for sets of 5. I've been lifting pretty consistently since then yet I've gradually dropped to the point where I can only do 185 for 5 on a good day. At first I thought I was overtraining, so I took 10 days off and lowered my volume and training frequency once I returned, but I still kept getting weaker. The only thing I can think of is that I'm not eating enough (I've heard bench is the most responsive lift to your calorie intake) but I've been working out with my brother who more or less eats what I do and his bench has gone up about 20 lbs over this period. I've watched a bunch of videos and read a lot about form but none of this has seemed to help.

It's extremely frustrating to go to the gym and bench less every workout, so I'm wondering if any of you have had this problem and how you fixed it.

    Thanks!

How can I lose gained skin?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:42 AM PST

I'm curious if it is even possible to lose gained skin in my case.

The current situation looks like this: https://imgur.com/h7ubmUX

At one point in my life, I was just under 100kg and I've gotten to the point of staying around 75kg, losing most of my fat, but that shape just won't go away. I've gone as far as starving myself down to 68kg but that made no difference in terms of loose skin, so I'm wondering - may be there are specific exercises that can help? Or something?
