Welcome to the /r/Fitness Daily Simple Questions Thread - Our daily thread to ask about all things fitness. Post your questions here related to your diet and nutrition or your training routine and exercises. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer.

As always, be sure to read the wiki first. Like, all of it.

Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search fittit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to search are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

Be aware that the more relevant information you add, the more relevant the answers you receive will be. And if you are posting about your routine, please make sure you follow the guidelines.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk or chit-chat. Also, the community decided long ago that we keep jokes, trolling, and memes outside of the Daily Q&A threads. Please use the downvote / report button when necessary.)

    Lifting with bar vs machines

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 10:58 PM PDT

So in my small town, 24/7 gym, I'm usually the only one in there when I do go, so I don't like to do bench press and squat with the bar as I don't have a spot.

So, for example, I've been instead of bench press been using multiple machines that work my pecs. Instead of squat with bar, I have been using squat machines to work the entirety of my leg.

Will I still notice gains doing it this way as long as I'm still progressing in weight and maintains consistency?

Am I Spending too much time on rest periods?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:30 PM PDT

I read online that you need roughly 90 seconds between sets. In my lifting sessions: I often feel like Im spending too much time resting and not enough time lifting. Is it normal to feel like half(if not more) of my time is spent resting? I follow 4x6 or 4x8 sets(depending on the exercise) for my lifts. I'm looking to cut rn.

    Extreme mental exhaustion during bulk?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:40 AM PDT

I started a bulk 3 weeks ago, eating roughly 3000 calories per day. High-protein high-carb diet. Sleeping between 7-8 hours per night, working out 5-6 times per week. Body is progressing super well and I'm looking great but my brain...good grief my brain is so bloody slow all the time the last couple of weeks and I can't get anything done outside of physical activity. Constantly finding my self dozing off around the late afternoon. Didn't happen before my bulk so I'm certain it's the culprit. Has anyone else experienced this and what's a good way to deal with it? Cheers legends.

    Weird question about sandbags.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 09:12 PM PDT

    Hi guys.

I began working out a few months ago from home and made pretty decent gains, but I never finished my home gym before everything went into quarantine. The problem is the equipment I'm missing, mainly some Olympic weights for my barbell. I'm also on a bit of a budget at the moment, but still want to lift heavier weights than my dumbbells allow.

So my friend recommends I try sandbags, not just on their own, but to add weight to the barbell. Stuff like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ludus-Imperium-Adjustable-Kettlebell-Sandbag/dp/B07VN9QXKS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1M3QRPESIODIQ&dchild=1&keywords=sandbag+kettlebell&qid=1593058062&sprefix=sandbag+kettle%2Caps%2C207&sr=8-2

Not that exact one, hell, I can make my own bag, but it would be something similar. The idea is to hang the bags on both ends of the barbell like... well, weights.

I can get sand really cheap, same with the bags.

So is this viable? It sounds and looks weird, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe they might slide off if I tilt them, but I don't think that would be an issue. I just don't want to waste time and energy on something useless.

    What do you guys think?

    Sumo deadlifts vs squat

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:04 AM PDT

Is it better for person with bad mobility and flexibility to do sumo deadlifts as the main compound movement for legs? Like I have bad mobility and flexibility and I don't want to do squats in there is a long term potential to get more fucked up that I am already. I am planning to do a lot of stretching but I think it would be good if I would do sumo deadlifts instead of squats until my mobility and flexibility is better. What do you think? Thanks

Anyone have any recommendations for posterior chain exercises?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:23 AM PDT

I don't enjoy deadlifting and yes I know it's the king of excercises but I've had bad experience due to poor form.

What would you recommend for posterior chain, especially lower back which I'm having trouble targeting.

    I usually do:

    Single arm rows

    Pull down

    Seated rows

For back days with progressive overload, but after some advice. Cheers.

    Cardio at altitude

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:30 AM PDT

I recently moved from a flat, sea-level area to a 7500ft elevation, very hilly area. I noticed a quite significant decrease in my endurance while running. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take you to adjust? Did you make any changes to your cardio routine?
