Can we talk about sandbag training?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:12 PM PDT

Like a lot of people, I've been finding new ways to work out. I found out I should expect to WFH until June and suspect gyms will continue to be closed regardless of whatever restrictions are lifted in the near-term, so I bought some sandbags.

This is completely new to me and I have questions, but I also suspect I'm not the only person who was either (1) curious, and/or; (2) new to this kind of training. I'd like to hear others' experiences, whether you're learning a new way to workout or have been doing this for a while:

    1. How should I adjust my expectations? I'm used to your traditional compound lifts with linear progression yada yada. What I've gleaned so far is that one should not hope at all to track weight increases, so how do you suggest measuring progress? How did you manage weight (e.g., you put in approximately X lbs and just used that same weight for all workouts, or you changed the weight each workout, etc.?)
    2. Any recommended routines for people who have been lifting for a while but are new to sandbags?
    3. Best practices?
    4. Things you wish you had known before starting?
    5. Incorporating a weighted vest?
    6. Have you worked in any resistance band training to supplement the sandbag training?

Thanks. I've been looking for ways to get outside anyway so I am trying to look at the silver lining, but I'd like to routinize this as much as I can so I'll stick to it.

    Transitioning from walking to running.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:51 AM PDT

Alright, so I THINK I'm ready to make that transition. HOWEVER. When I started my weight loss/active lifestyle journey 5 months ago, I chose brisk walking instead of running cause I had heard that running while overweight can cause serious injury and so on.

I'm doing 2 (1hour) brisk walks (around 6kmph) a day + walk at work. Adds up to around 25k steps a day and I'm starting to feel that while my legs are slightly tired it has become pretty easy cardio wise.

I've lost around 45 pounds but Im still overweight for now (180cm 85kg).

Do I just pull the trigger and start running or do I keep walking till Im at a healthy weight?

I bought a Rowing Machine. Dam I’m unfit

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:36 AM PDT

    Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with a bit of advice, I've googled all sorts and gained snippets of information but the question I have about my results seem unclear.

Little about me, 31 years old. 5ft 8in and I weigh 65kg. I don't exercise anymore. And I drink everyday, so I thought I need to turn stuff around, anyway.

I bought a rowing machine, magnetic as it's quiet for our neighbours. I started exercising on Tuesday 28th.

Day 1: I did 4 minutes row with a resistance of 2, 10 sits-ups, 10-press ups, 10 lunges, 10 squats, 10 bench presses, and a light jog. Nearly killed me.

(I thought I'd change my workout for Day 2)

Day 2: I managed to do 10 minutes of rowing. Didn't time. And rested.

Day 3 (today): 500m, Resistance 4, I did it in 12:57, 421 strokes, according to the rowing machine.

Everywhere I google it says i should have done 500m row in 2 minutes. Also it's equivalent of a sprint. But I had a resistance of 4 on the rowing machine so surly that would be different from a sprint.

Any help or guidance in my result for Day 3 would be very kind and possibly some future advice with a schedule for my fitness level. Not sure weather just to do 500m everyday until I get it to 2 minutes.

    Thank you

Do small wrists affect bicep curls?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:23 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

So, my goal is to curl as heavy as I can in the cleanest form possible. So far I have had no problems doing 40s and transitioning to 45s. I'm Just wondering, regardless of forearm muscle (which I know for a fact that will help in curling), do small wrists add any disadvantage to curling? (I have 6'' wrists :( )

Just asking because recently I found that my forearms are my primary weakness in curling heavier weights. Thanks in advance

I have a 60m (197ft) race on Monday. How much faster can I get if I train a lot?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:43 AM PDT

This race just popped up, didn't have time to prepare. A few days isn't much. I can do around 9 seconds now. Can I cut, for example, 1 second off that time if I train a lot?

    LBS to Stone question

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:39 AM PDT

    Hi All,

Quick question I cannot get my head around.

I weight 174lbs on a scale, when I change it to Stone and lbs it will say 12 stone 6lbs

    - This is incorrect and majority of google formulas of 174 divided by 14 would put me at 12 stone 4 lbs

    - MyFitness Pal also has me at 174lbs being 12 stone 6lbs

I cannot for the life of me figure out where the 2lbs are coming from with the understanding that 14lbs makeup a stone.

What's the best way to lift heavier?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:31 AM PDT

I've found that when I come back to the gym I tend to do compound exercises.

I do lifts and increase the weight each week. But I've found that I always fail at the same point every time, when the weight reaches a certain amount.

I feel like I'm just building up to what I can naturally lift and then that's it, no progression.

It seems like a really simple question, but how do I lift more? This is a point where I've only been back at the gym for roughly 6 weeks, so there's certainly room to grow, but once I hit my limit I just can't seem to push past it, my body is just done.

For instance, my squat reaches 115kg at 5 sets of 5. I can just finish the last set. At 117.5kg I fail at the 3rd or 4th set and can't manage 115kg for the 5th set after that.

    Fitneas dvd/streams recommendations

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:31 AM PDT

Any recommendations for fitness dvd/online streams that are better than d-list celebrity christmas drivel. My dumbell sets are too light and getting boring doing the same workouts at high rep and jogging seems to be the worst calorie burn for the effort. Looking for the following ideally:

    • bodypump style without the barbell
    • no running like Insanity (who has space for shuttles in their lounge?)
    • a series of a few workouts on rotation to keep things interesting
    • 30 min to 60 min each day

When did you first feel you made progress in your fitness?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:22 AM PDT

That one morning you looked in the mirror and said, "I'm looking good!" What was one thing you did just prior to that that got you there?

Certain exercise? Muscles you targeted? Change in diet?

I'm not looking for silver bullets, but looking for things we may be missing from our routine.

    Is a PPL split better?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:08 AM PDT

I've been doing Chest/triceps, back/biceps and shoulders/legs twice a week with a pair of dumbbells since quarantine started. I'm not sure if this is effective so I was considering switching to a PPL split. Does PPL include abs and is it better for gains?

I'm preparing for when the gyms open up and looking for a non-restrictive mask, not one of those altitude simulation mask.

    Any options?

Front squat, weight over the heel

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:08 AM PDT

I seem to have more of my balance centered on my heel of my foot and I find it difficult to "form the tripod" as they say, with the inner and outer parts of where the front of my feet make contact with the ground (ball and outer ball?)

I am also lifting wearing shoes but I don't feel it changes enough to be totally balanced when I take them off.

Anyone had dramas like this? How did you make your foot more centered? Should I elevate the toes or will that be bad for my knees?

I'm looking to join a zoom workout group but don't know how

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:40 PM PDT

I hope this isn't a dumb question but I'm having trouble finding resources on Google. It's mostly info telling trainers how to continue their business.

Anyway, I live in Hawaii so I have a time zone restraint but im trying to figure out how to go about my search to find a group. I know most of the time you have to pay to be a part of the group so I'm wondering if there is a resource of classes people offer on zoom for different things.

Id like to get into a workout routine and like the zoom platform. Anyone able to guide me in the right direction? I'm just rephrasing my question into Google and don't know where to go from here.

    Thanks in advance.

    Weak hip stability

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:09 PM PDT

I get so shaky and weak and unable to control myself when I hold a glute bridge for too long. Fairly new to fitness training and learned for the first time how weak my glutes are.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this you're welcome to share! :)

Getting Back Into Shape Quickly After a Bad year

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:43 PM PDT

I had a really frustrating year in college last year. I gained about 40-50 pounds. I used to be very fit and lift weights almost daily. I'm still relatively strong but very out of shape. I haven't been to the gym consistently in over a year. I also used to track macros but have recently been eating a ton of junk food.

My plan is to lose weight very quickly by restricting calories and working out. I then plan to transition back to the healthy way i used to eat about a year ago.

Right now I'm 5'9 and about 230 pounds. I was pretty lean at about 180 pounds. I had a lot of muscle then and could bench over 2 plates and squat over 3 plates. Does anyone have any advice on how to drop the weight quickly.

Would it be possible to get close to 180 again in a few months? Thanks!

Can't feel my side deltoids while doing lateral raises.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:02 PM PDT

Can anyone give me some tips on how to maximize side deltoid use while doing lateral raises? I really want to grow my shoulders but I just can't feel them being used.
