Beginner Fitness: Running/Hillwalking and Leg Days

    Running/Hillwalking and Leg Days

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 03:12 PM PDT

I've been doing Couch to 5k to get myself running three times a week and on weekends I'll go hillwalking for a couple hours. I've also been trying out strength training. But I was wondering about training legs. Is the running and hillwalking making training legs overkill? Or is it something that's necessary to keep up with these activities? Or are they just totally unrelated and I should be carrying out my strength training the same as I would if I wasn't running or hill walking at all?

    Just a quick question

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 10:10 PM PDT

I really, really want to go to the gym and start working out. My main goal is to lose some weight, and bulk up a little bit (I recently gained almost 30lbs as a side effect of taking anti anxiety medication over the last 6-8 months)

I have all the motivation, but the only thing holding me back is embarrassment. I have literally never lifted weights or used any of the machines at the gym in my life, and I don't want to make myself look stupid by using them wrong etc.

What would be the best way to start? What is the best gym to start at in terms of being (relatively) judgement free?

Any responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Thoughts on my workouts please

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:35 PM PDT

    Hi all,

This is my first post so if there's something inappropriate about it, please point me in the right direction.

I'm really looking for some guidance and input about my routine.

I'm 6'2" tall and I weigh 222 pounds today. My current goal is to lose fat off my body. I imagine I have about 20 pounds to lose to get to a point where I will feel like I look good. When I get there I'll think more about actually building muscle. Here's what I'm doing about it:

Every day I walk on a treadmill 40 minutes, 3.2 miles an hour, incline level eight.

I also lift weights between three and five days a week, organizing my split into three separate workouts. In all of the exercises I do three sets of 12 either supersets or triple sets.

    Day 1

Incline bench press Wide grip easy bar curl

Resistance band chest fly Narrow grip easy bar curl Dumbbell skull crusher

Lying dumbbell pull over Tricep push down with a resistance band Easy bar reverse curl

    Day 2

Band assisted pull up Lateral raise

    Dumbbell rows Dumbbell front raise

Dumbbell overhead press Dumbbell reverse fly

    Day 3

Hex bar squat Single leg calf raise with a dumbbell

Walking lunges with dumbbells Hip abduction with a resistance band

Dumbbell Romanian deadlifts with a resistance band around my waist Box step up with dumbbells

Any thoughts, Critiques or encouragement are welcome, thank you so much!

Body progressed faster than the brain and now I’m stuck thinking I can’t when I can

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 02:20 PM PDT

I have kind of a weird issue. After over a decade of false starts and feeling hopeless about it, I've finally been able to do a pull-up. The only thing is that I didn't work towards it at all or even have an exercise routine and a majority of myself doesn't believe I can do a pull-up.

I've done one consistently every time I've tried, so long as I give myself a break in between, but I still don't think I can do it and I don't know why. I look at the bar and still feel the hopelessness rush over me even as I tell myself that I can do them! I look at the bar and it feels impossible. I'll do one and realize "yes I can do it!" but the moment I'm back down it feels impossible again. More so because my body is exhausted from the first which is completely ridiculous! The exhaustion should be a reminder that I did one and can do them!

I know that feeling like something is impossible holds oneself back from unlocking all they can do. The fact that I can do a pull up while thinking it's impossible is really incredible. I bet I could do so much more if I'm able to get my brain unstuck in thinking I can't do something. Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do?

I'm so confused by the squat guide by Stronger By Science. What should I really do with my knee?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 03:07 AM PDT

simply adjust your foot angle so that your toes and knees point the same direction.

Many people start having balance issues if their feet are turned outward 45 degrees or more, simply because their feet are then "shorter" front-to-back when looking at them from the side. Sometimes, this can make it easier to lose your balance forward or back if you misgroove the lift.

In the first picture, my knees are tracking directly over my toes. In the second, they "tick" in a bit, which generally isn't problematic. In the third picture, they're caving to a degree that's likely dangerous.

    Motivation

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:43 AM PDT

I am blessed to have practically a full gym in my garage - total gym machine, punching bag, treadmill, weight bench (1 barbell with 10-50 lbs) and yoga mat. I have a window AC unit and a space heater for temp control.

I just can't get myself in there. What are some good tips/tricks for motivating yourself?? Don't think it's depression or anything... I just keep pushing it off!
