Also, there's a handy search function to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search r/Fitness by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to check first are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

If you are posting a routine critique request, make sure you follow the guidelines for including enough detail.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk, chit-chat, jokes, memes, "Dear Diary" type comments, shitposting, or non-fitness questions. It is for fitness questions only, and only those that are serious.)

What does it mean to run? How can beginners run for 25-40 mins straight? Do they really mean jog?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:18 PM PST

I am just starting out exercise. I can hardly "jog" for 2-3 mins and I hear ppl saying beginners can do 30 mins straight of running. I am 23 year old male, and slim. I want to improve my health and do cardio the right way. I am obsessed with numbers. Do beginners really run full speed for 30 minutes? Or is it more jog? What should I do?

My friend tells me he can run for 30 mins straight for 7mph.

Note: my goal is cardio. I want to be as healthy as possible. So this isn't meant as a sport to me. I know I need to hit my target heart rate (197 bpm) and I'm obsessed with that.

Edit: my max heart rate is 197 my bad.

Is is target heart rate more like 50% or 85% of max rate? What is more common?

    What is proper running form?

    How can I make maximum use, strength-wise, from 2 x 10KG (22 Lb) dumbbells?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2021 12:18 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I used to be quite into strength training, particularly power-lifting and Olympic Lifting. I worked up to a maximum 2 rep bench press 18 months ago of 140 KG / 308 Lb.

My workouts have typically consisted of mostly barbell work with a few bicep curls just for "aesthetics". I used to play a couple of sports but for the last few years have been doing this mostly for fun. But the composite lifts were always what I enjoyed most.

My SO recently picked up 2 adjustable dumbells as a gift. The catch is that they are only 10KG (22 Lb) each. These are lighter than I would have used in a gym for most lifts but: a) gyms (and most sports stores) are currently closed where I'm located, b) I'm horribly de-conditioned due to lockdown.

Basically I'd love to know what's the absolute maximum benefit I can get from one set of two fairly light dumbbells until I have something better to work with?
I guess I'll have to focus primarily on high rep / muscle building type work until I can get a gym membership again. But if there's anything I'm not thinking of please let me know.

    TY!

    My HR is Suddenly Higher

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:41 PM PST

    Hi all:

I have been doing cardio on a stationary bike every other day for a few months now, and I like to keep my heart rate around 125 bpm.

However, for the last 2 cardio sessions, my heart rate is in the mid-130s EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT INCREASED THE RESISTANCE OR CADENCE, or made any other changes to the cardio routine.

What could possibly be the reason(s) for such an abrupt increase in the heart rate, even though the cardio exercise conditions remain the same?

I measure my heart rate in 2 ways - the bike itself, as well as a pulse oximeter, so the readings are pretty accurate.

    Thanks!
