Welcome back to Weakpoint Wednesdays! Please read the new rule before posting!

The main rule for these weekly threads will be that if you are not a verified competitor, you are not to give advice or coaching to those seeking help.

Here I'll be trying to create a practice environment for us to critique one another in preparation for this competition! What good is a world-class physique if you don't know how to show it off when it matters most? Seriously people, its free posing coaching.

Everybody is welcome to participate, this ain't 'mirin mondays so don't worry about the status of your bulk or cut. We are here to improve.

This weeks pose: Front Double Bicep!

    1) Your feet are approximately shoulder width apart, measured from the heels. Point your toes towards the outside in a "V" shape, with your toes pointed out about 45 degrees. Keep in mind that different people will have different leg sizes, lengths, and shape, so there can be some wiggle room to accentuate the individual taste and physique, shoulder width is however a good starting point so you can gauge if your feet need to be a little closer together or a little farther apart to best display your body shape and type. Push your knees towards the outside, over your toes. This is what creates that "quad sweep" and brings out most of the leg definition as it literally forces you to flex your legs. So if you find it hard to remember to flex, it might be easier to think of pushing your knees outwards.

    2) You want big legs, a big back, and a small waist. Depending on the length, thickness, and abdominal development of your waist, you can decide if its better to elongate your waist to try and make it appear smaller, or if you already have a longer torso with a smaller waist, flex your abs and stand totally straight. Stick out your bum slightly. You can not activate the hip flexors or the Sartorius (the rope looking muscle that goes from the top of your leg down to the inside of your knee) if your pelvis is tilted forward. Stick out your bum a wee bit to be able to show all the definition on the top half of your leg. Try not to over do it though, you do not want to look like your about to have a bowel movement. It takes some practice to get the right spot where your still standing up straight, while activating those muscles.

    3) Raise your elbows slightly above your shoulders and focus on spreading your lats. The judges want to be able to see your lats. The double biceps pose for men is just inside a 90 degree bend of the elbow. Rotate your elbows to the front, and wrists to the back, rotating at the shoulder. Make a fist, you can put your hands wherever is comfortable. You can play with this once you become more comfortable in the pose to see what looks best on you.

    Examples:

    Phil & Ramy

    Terrence Ruffin

    Action Figure Sized Chris Bumstead

    Shanique Grant

    What we're here for:

Critique the pose, not the poser.

Everybody is welcome to participate, this ain't 'mirin mondays so don't worry about the status of your bulk or cut. We are here to improve.

Every pose can be hit in more than one fashion.

Individual criticisms tailored to the posters physique are absolutely welcome!

Paul Dillet had a freaky front double bicep. Who do you think has the best front double right now?

The 2020 Olympia got me realizing how close we are to a change of the guard

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 02:44 PM PST

If we just look at the absolute top tier guys, it's safe to say that Dexter and likely Phil are retiring. They were at the top of the sport in 2008, still at the top of their sport in 2015, but now in 2020 have shown major insurmountable regressions in their physiques. That got me to realize that the other guys usually considered contenders for the title are getting old too. Shawn Rhoden, who is still banned from competing, is 45. Kai is also 45 and should be considered presumably retired alongside Shawn. Roelly is 43 with a 2009 pro debut, he's probably on his way out soon. Cedric is also 43, he has different priorities in life, I think we're probably gonna see one or two more AC/Arnold showings from him before he decides to reign it in.

Brandon and Bonac are 38. I think they are still gonna be at the top for a little while longer, alongside Ramy who I had no idea was only 36 until yesterday. The 2021 Olympia could very well be between those guys alongside the 37 year old Flex Lewis and Hadi who is 33(!!). My point is just that so many of these guys hit their strides in the mid to early 2010s and even the late 2000s. None of the young guys have really made a name for themselves until this past weekend, where we saw Iain and Hunter battle it out for top of 2nd callout and got to see somewhat exhausted but still potentially great versions of Regan and Antoine take rear echelon. Two years ago Regan was a classic guy and Antoine wasn't competing. We also have to consider guys that couldn't make it over due to Covid such as the Shed, easily the #6 finisher if he did the show in my opinion. All these late 20s/early 30s guys are going to become the major players in the next 2-5 years.

So in short; I think we're right on the cusp of the changing of the guard for the very upper level of this sport; a lot of our household names won't be there two or three Olympias from now. So far there's no dominant champion of the 20s, like Ronnie/Jay of the 00s and Phil of the 10s. Short term I can see Ramy and Brandon battling out for a little while with improved versions of Iain & Hunter pushing Bonac & Hadi and then who knows. Maybe Hadi adds a couple pounds of muscle while maintaining conditioning and becomes six time Mr. Olympia, maybe the judges end up really liking Nick Walker, literally anything can happen and it's a super exciting time to be a fan of bodybuilding.

Last note, It'd be pretty cool if a dominant champ doesn't emerge and the title just keeps trading hands. Haven't seen that since the 80s (there were the same amount of winners between 1980-1984 as between 1984-2008). But on the other hand it looks like Cbum just solidified his position as 10x classic Mr. O lmao

Big Ramy’s and Nasser El Sonbaty

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 05:58 PM PST

In light of Ramy's crowning, I've found it interesting to compare his victory to the loss (some would say robbing) of Nasser in 1997, to an arguably post-prime Dorian Yates. Nasser appeared at the contest in the best condition of his competitive career, and Dorian had been suffering from injuries and a slow decline in the quality of this physique.

In a lot of ways Nasser and Ramy have similar physiques and stories. Nasser was also 5'10" and achieved an insane muscular structure, weighing near 290 lb. at his best (up to 330 offseason). Both were gifted by nature with a degree of width in their scapular structures which allowed them to dwarf much of their competitors onstage with ease. This width lent to both a supremely wide back and dominant Lat Spread poses. However, they also both were known for a lack of delineation/separation in their backs which hampered the overall greatness of their back poses. This surely came into play against The legendary Yates, whose back was so thick, dry and detailed that he was still able to best Nasser from the rear.

Nasser and Ramy both built huge amounts of muscle tissue within short timeframes and rose to the heights of the Olympia ranks fairly early in their contest histories (Nasser earned 2nd on his fourth Olympia showing, and Ramy did on his fifth). They both managed to retain relatively small waists and aesthetically pleasing abdomens despite being among the heaviest and most muscular competitors in the line up.

Similarly you could compare Dorian and Phil to the extent that both were on the downside of their careers after several years of domination. Yates would retire after winning that 1997 show, leaving Ronnie to surpass Nasser and begin his reign as the winner in 1998. It will be interesting to see if Phil chooses the same route.

Why doesn’t Arnold comment on Olympia?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 06:53 PM PST

This weekend I wanted to hear his thoughts. I assume he watches, but no tweets or anything. Is it because Olympia is competition to the Classic?

He's the legend, it would fascinating, wish he would live tweet with the fans during the competition.
