Daily Simple Questions Thread - September 16, 2020

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 03:04 AM PDT

Welcome to the /r/Fitness Daily Simple Questions Thread - Our daily thread to ask about all things fitness. Post your questions here related to your diet and nutrition or your training routine and exercises. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer.

As always, be sure to read the wiki first. Like, all of it.

Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search fittit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness" after your search topic.

Other good resources to search are Exrx.net for exercise-related topics and Examine.com for nutrition and supplement science.

Be aware that the more relevant information you add, the more relevant the answers you receive will be. And if you are posting about your routine, please make sure you follow the guidelines.

(Please note: This is not a place for general small talk or chit-chat. Also, the community decided long ago that we keep jokes, trolling, and memes outside of the Daily Q&A threads. Please use the downvote / report button when necessary.)

Beginner deadlift on own (no trainer) - how much weight?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 02:19 AM PDT

I'm posting for my son who is interested in beginning lifting weights, and he's specifically interested in deadlifts. He wants me to purchase a barbell and some plates for him to start but I'm not sure what weight he should begin with to be safe and not injure anything. He's a large young man standing 6ft 5 tall and weighing 140kgs, obviously overweight but also quite strong as he is only 20 years old. He has autism and due to that can't really have a one on one trainer so wants to do this at home on his own. So I think he should start with a lowish weight and build up as he gets comfortable but have no idea what is a good weight for someone his size to start? and how much/often to increase the plates? He has watched youtube videos to study the correct form and has practiced with dumbbells, (one in each hand at same time) that weigh 10kg each but really wants to move on to barbell so I want to encourage him while he's interested! Also would like to know if there is a subreddit where he could post videos of him lifting to get some (autism sensitive/non-roasting) feedback on his form.
